Tour Overview
Shuri, the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom which flourished for 450 years from 1429, is home to Shuri Castle, a symbol of the kingdom. Equipped with a variety of barrier-free facilities such as ramps, inclined lifts, and stair-climbing lifts, it is Okinawa's most accessible tourist spot, allowing wheelchair users to visit even the main hall. It is also a valuable opportunity to witness firsthand the ongoing reconstruction process following the 2019 fire.
After a thorough visit to Shuri Castle, head to Kokusai Street, Okinawa's largest shopping and entertainment district. With its wide, flat sidewalks stretching for approximately 1.6 kilometers, it's an ideal environment for wheelchair users. Enjoy authentic Okinawan cuisine such as goya champuru, Okinawa soba, and taco rice, and freely browse for souvenirs like purple sweet potato tarts and chinsuko cookies. If you have extra time, explore the traditional Okinawan pottery culture at Tsuboya Yachimun Street.

Examples of accessible locations
Shuri Castle

Shuri Castle, which served as the political, diplomatic, and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom from 1429 to 1879, is a castle with a unique beauty that blends Chinese and Japanese architectural styles. Although the main hall was destroyed by fire in 2019, reconstruction is currently underway, offering a rare opportunity to witness the restoration process itself. The castle walls with their vivid contrast of vermilion and white, the numerous castle gates built of Ryukyu limestone, and the panoramic views of Naha city and the East China Sea from the hilltop make it a special spot where you can experience the history and natural beauty of Okinawa all at once. As one of the World Heritage Sites "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu," it continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
Accessibility Information
A variety of ramps, inclined lifts, stairlifts, etc. are installed.
Wheelchairs and canes are available for free rental.
The interior of the main hall can also be viewed using a chair that can be raised for seating.
Accessible via the ramp near Shureimon Gate.
The return journey is downhill, so assistance from a caregiver is essential.
Discounts available upon presentation of a disability certificate.
Kokusai Street

This approximately 1.6-kilometer-long main street runs through the heart of Naha City and is also known as the "Miracle Mile." Having recovered remarkably quickly from the ashes of post-war reconstruction, this street is packed with about 600 shops, including Okinawan restaurants, awamori (Okinawan liquor) specialty stores, souvenir shops selling purple sweet potato tarts and chinsuko (Okinawan shortbread), and select shops for Okinawan fashion. You can enjoy Okinawan delicacies to your heart's content, such as goya champuru (bitter melon stir-fry), Okinawa soba (Okinawan soba noodles), taco rice (Okinawan savory pancake), and Blue Seal ice cream. On Sundays, a transit mall (pedestrian zone) is opened, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely stroll even more.
Accessibility Information
The sidewalks are wide and flat, making it an ideal environment for wheelchair users.
Conveniently located directly connected to the Yui Rail station.
Sundays are even more comfortable with the pedestrian zone.
Multipurpose restrooms: Multiple available within commercial facilities along the street.
Tsuboya Yachimun Street

This approximately 400-meter-long cobblestone street is home to kilns producing "yachimun," Okinawan pottery with a history of about 300 years. Stepping away from the hustle and bustle of Kokusai Street, you enter a different world with a tranquil atmosphere. Workshops, galleries, and pottery shops line the street, where you can encounter a wide range of yachimun, from traditional Okinawan fish patterns and arabesque designs to contemporary designs. The joy of finding your own favorite piece of pottery is an experience unique to a trip to Okinawa.
Accessibility Information
The streets are relatively flat and wheelchair accessible.
Some sections are paved with cobblestones. Your guide will lead you along the flatter route.
Within walking distance from Kokusai Street
Naminoue Beach

This is the only beach in Naha city, a tropical oasis just minutes from the city center. The emerald green sea and white sandy beach make it an easy spot to experience the beauty of Okinawa's ocean. A promenade runs along the beach, allowing you to stroll leisurely while enjoying the sea breeze.
Accessibility Information
The promenade along the beach is paved and accessible by wheelchair.
Access to the beach is difficult for wheelchair users, but you can still fully enjoy the ocean view from the promenade.
Examples of accessible restaurants
The tour price does not include meals, but we can recommend wheelchair-accessible restaurants in the areas you plan to visit.
Shuri Tenro

This large Okinawan restaurant is located almost in the center of Kokusai Street. It offers a full lineup of representative Okinawan dishes, including goya champuru, rafute (braised pork belly), okinawa soba, sea grapes, and island shallots. The dignified interior, reminiscent of the Ryukyu Kingdom's royal court, creates an extraordinary space that evokes Okinawa's history and culture. The lunch set menus are generously portioned, making it perfect for those who want to enjoy a variety of Okinawan flavors.
Accessibility Information
Elevator available. Wheelchair access confirmed.
Table seating is available. As it is a large restaurant, there is ample space between tables.
Conveniently located along Kokusai Street, making it easily accessible on tour routes.
Accessible restrooms: Located inside the store or in nearby commercial facilities.
